Ford Design System Recreation
Recreating a design system to deepen my knowledge in Figma.
Overview
Completed another Memorisely course; this time, an 8-week deep dive into Design Systems. A huge thank you to my incredible instructors, Matt Stenquist and Anabelle Dubois, for making such a complex topic feel approachable and understandable. Design systems go far beyond just components and tokens; they're about scalability, consistency, and collaboration across teams.
For my case study, I focused on Ford Motor Company. Even at large companies, maintaining a design system is a challenge, especially at Ford, where multiple layers of branding exist across cars, internal tools, and external interfaces. Building a system from scratch made me realize just how much strategy goes into keeping things functional, flexible, and future proof.
Key Takeaways
- Collaboration is everything: The best design systems bridge the gap between designers, developers, and stakeholders.
- Think ahead: A well-planned system from the start makes scaling easier down the line, and easier to adapt when challenges inevitably arise.
- Scalability is key: Tokens and components should evolve without breaking consistency. This is hard, and there are multiple approaches to solving scalability; the solution depends on the team's needs.
- Test rigorously: A small oversight can cause major inconsistencies across products. Testing also allows the designer to identify areas for improvement.
- Clear documentation matters: Even the best system is useless if teams don't know how to use it. But try not to write a novel; no one wants to read it.
Design systems might be niche, but they're the backbone of a strong, scalable brand. It takes a lot of effort to maintain (constant iteration, governance, and collaboration), but the payoff is huge. Diving deeper into this space has already made me a more versatile UX/UI designer! I'm excited to see where these new skills take me.
